Proxmox is a very capable hypervisor and a decent alternative to VMware in 2024. Long story short, many organizations are scrambling to find alternative solutions due to the recent VMware-Broadcom aquisition.
So far this year, two strong features have been implemented into Proxmox.
- Veeam integration
- Proxmox Datacenter Manager
here is some information on the Veeam integration:

Now for the main feature that I and many others have been waiting for. Proxmox Datacenter Manager

I manager VMware clusters scattered throughout the globe. One of the nicest things we deployed just before the acquisition was VMware ROBO licensing and having one vCenter to manager all of the clusters.
It is so convenient to login into one system to review the health and status of all your vmware hosts.
Knowing Proxmox didn’t have that capability, wasn’t a dealbreaker but it is a very nice feature to have and will help managing multiple nodes/clusters.
There has been a tool created that allow a central management window for Proxmox, such as Cluster Manager but it seems to be a project and not meant for production use.
Today, the team at Proxmox have updated their roadmap and released the Alpha version.
I’ve been ecstatic to hear and see this myself so of course, I downloaded the ISO and gave it a try.
The setup is very simple and once the quick installation finished, I was able to get to the webpage via https://x.x.x.x:8443
Here is the main dashboard, after I added my cluster:
The below screenshot shows my cluster summary:
My cluster is a WIP as I’ve just received some hardware (Mellanox) and waiting for some replacement memory.
Overall, its a very nice welcomed addition to this platform.
I strongly suggest checking it out and sharing your input with the Proxmox community.
